Presidential Networker: Gaining Insight

The Fort Worth Chapter of SMPS is enthusiastic about the turnout for our networking event Tuesday at the Petroleum Club. SMPS Society President Craig Galati, AIA, FSMPS, CPSM was our special guest and was introduced by SMPS Foundation President Carolyn Ferguson, FSMPS, CPSM. Also in attendance was the Society President-Elect, Nancy Usrey, FSMPS, CPSM. Craig shared great insight with us about what's going on with SMPS, the importance of differentiating our firms, challenged each of us to take look to the future and ask 'so what'. His presentation included many relatable points presented in a “Top 5” format, including reasons why SMPS is a resource not only to marketers but all A/E/C business people. He also talked about giving back to the profession and encouraged marketers to strive to be leaders and decision-makers at the highest levels of our firms. He discussed involvement of technical staff and principals (in addition to marketers) and encouraged all members to reach out and make the most of networking opportunities. He also encouraged members to speak up and get involved.

Before the event, Craig and Nancy spent a few minutes talking with the current Fort Worth Board of Directors and shared some of their insights and years of experience Craig talked to the board about the resurgence of the seller/doer model in the A/E/C industry and emphasized that project managers need to spend time learning to network and market their services. Nancy and Craig also encouraged members to find more ways to directly link marketing to business and operations within our companies and endeavor to partner with a variety of organizations for shared programs such as ULI, AIA, ACEC, accounting firms, HR associations, real estate groups, etc. This kind of partnership engages a broader audience, including higher-level business people.
