Event Recap: Como Community Center Hard Hat Tour | Contributed by Randy Avila, SMPS Fort Worth Chapter President

On October 16, I joined several SMPS Fort Worth members with a hard hat tour of the new Como Community Center, graciously hosted by Muckleroy & Falls and HKS.

smps Como community center tourFirst of all, the design of the new center by HKS is simply stunning. The architectural details showcase a new, modern look that welcome the community with an inviting façade that features a tall, covered entry and a variety of neutral colors on its paneling and brick treatment. The layout of the multi-use spaces and traffic flow inside the facility were carefully planned with programming options in mind. The new center is not only available as a safe place for teenagers to get together for a pick-up basketball game, but also for senior citizens to meet for various activities through a separate, dedicated entry point. The center offers several multi-purpose rooms that can be divided into smaller spaces to fit the needs of the occupants. From cooking demonstrations in a commercial kitchen to birthday parties and reception areas available to the public for rent, the facility is designed to accommodate a variety of events for multiple purposes.

Also evident is the pride and attention to detail that Muckleroy & Falls put into the construction of the building. Project Manager Dustin Vardeman outlined the remaining project milestones, which is ahead of schedule as this writing. During our tour, the site was busy with multiple construction activities. From what I could tell, the work was primarily the project’s finishing touches and/or punch list items. With a soft opening several weeks away, I was impressed with the level of completion by Muckleroy & Falls.

smps como community center tourThe most important take away from the tour was how devoted the entire project team is to not only the completion of the new Como Community Center, but understanding the neighborhood’s history and the positive impact of the new center for the community. HKS’ Michael Parkinson shared the story of how Como began in the late 1800’s and its transformation in the years since. Designer Douglas Mullen pointed out the importance of the purple and gold to the residents of Como and how he incorporated those colors throughout the center. Muckleroy & Falls’ Superintendent Andrew Bergen even talked about the many ways the facility will be immediately utilized once it opens and the sense of pride it will create for the general public.

The rich history of the Como neighborhood beats strongly in the heart of Fort Worth, and the new Como Community Center will continue its proud and vibrant legacy.
